Silirejo Village, Pekalongan (07/24/2023) – Setting aside money to save can be difficult if we are not used to it. However, instilling the habit of saving early on is not complicated if it has become a routine. Knowing the various forms of money and understanding how to save and be frugal will help train skills in managing money wisely and according to needs.

Diva Heriyana, a student of the Tax Accounting Study Program at the Vocational School of Diponegoro University, provides training and encourages children to get used to managing their finances well. Teaching children to live frugally aims to build character, such as not being wasteful, disciplined, appreciating money, being independent, and distinguishing wants from needs. Saving is setting aside money for specific needs within a particular time. Many argue that introducing money to children can make them materialistic. However, introducing money can make them appreciate the value of money more and learn to count through the nominal amounts they encounter.

In this education, the material presented includes:

  • The definition of money.
  • Types of money.
  • The concept of saving.
  • Tips for saving from an early age.

The presentation uses language and illustrations that are easy for elementary school students to understand, with a pleasant atmosphere to attract their interest. During the presentation of the material, a question and answer session with prizes was inserted to maintain the children’s enthusiasm. At the end of the session, some questions had to be answered by the students, and awards in the form of piggy banks were given to those who answered correctly. This program was held at SD Negeri 01 Silirejo and SD Negeri 02 Silirejo with a target of 47 students in grades 5 and 6. From this activity, it is hoped that elementary school children will become aware of the importance of saving early, appreciate money, and get used to setting aside some of their money. Thus, they will have a habit of saving and be able to distinguish between their needs and wants.
