Undip Vocational School Lecturer Mohamad Endy Yulianto has developed breakthrough research on nano-taflavin tea as an anti-covid-19 medicinal ingredient.

Endy is known as a brilliant lecturer who has produced six granted patent works. There are also 36 copyrights and five scientific publications in reputable international journals. “My team and I are also developing research focusing on handling Covid 19,” he said.

The study is entitled “Production of Encapsulated Theasinensins, Hesperidin and Piperine in Nano Liposome Emulsion Liquid Membranes as Potential Inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 Mpro” funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture (2021 – 2023). This research is motivated by concerns about acute respiratory diseases.

Especially after the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus throughout the world. Based on studies and molecular dynamics simulations by the research team, Prof Dr. Ari Yuniastuti, Dr. Dadan Rohdiana, Dr. Siti Nur Jannah, Dr. Eng Vita Paramita, Hermawan Dwi Ariyanto Ph.D., and Rizka Amalia ST MT shows the existence of compounds that can block the catalytic active site of the main protease (Mpro ) on SAR-CoV-2. These compounds are bioactive Thea Sinensis, oolonghomobisflavan-A, theaflavin-3-O-gallate, hesperidin, and piperine, which are very prospective.

It is found in tea, oranges, and chilies. Endy, the Head of the Industrial Chemical Engineering Technology Study Program (TRKI) at the Undip Vocational School, has also conducted studies through the pharmaceutical development of nanoencapsulation due to the shape of nano-sized viruses.

The application of liposomal biopolymer encapsulation techniques will be able to protect bioactive compounds. They are increasing bioavailability, high product stability, and controlling the release of the material’s core compounds at the target. Liposomes have been widely applied as encapsulation materials for medicines and nutritional supplements due to their stability and safety. The team collaborates with the pharmaceutical industry and government to make the herbal medicine nano theaflavin tea in capsule form. The hope is that shortly, it can enter the industrial commercialization stage.

This research has also resulted in two granted patents, namely patent no. IDP000089506, with the invention “Method for Separating Theaflavin from Tea Leaves using an Ultrafiltration Membrane,” and patent no. IDS000005812 with the invention “Process of Extraction of Piperine from Javanese Chilies via Subcritical Water.”

Apart from that, a granted patent work was produced in 2023 covering inventions with numbers IDS00000668, IDS000006334, IDS000005465 and no IDS000005673.

Patent number IDS000005673 is currently being tested in the PPTK Gambung Bandung Green Tea industry. Meanwhile, patent number IDS000005465, with the invention title “Drying Process for Candied Pineapple Seaweed Using a Multi-Rack Dryer with Zeolite Adsorption,” is being used by the Pemalang community. The Joint Business Group (KUB) 3 Sekawan in Pemalang uses it to produce seaweed pineapple sweets with a capacity of 50 kg. This KUB is located in Beluk Village RT 08 RW 03 Belik District, with Jariyah as chairman.

This product development will also touch on mass commercialization in the fruit-based sweets industry throughout Indonesia. Endy admitted that all of this could not be separated from the support of the Undip Innovation Directorate, which was extraordinary in facilitating the registration stages until obtaining a granted patent.
